We at the Schumann Library uphold intellectual freedom and the right to equitable access to library materials and information. Therefore, the Schumann Library does not and will not participate in or endorse information censorship. Book banning is a form of information censorship.
As the information center of the University, the Library is dedicated to upholding educational standards and academic integrity. In accordance with the University’s commitment to Inclusive Excellence, the Library maintains a diverse and inclusive collection that reflects our unique community, their identities, and their information needs.
The Librarians at Wentworth select, acquire, and de-select library materials. As such, the Librarians reserve the right to decide if materials are inaccurate and/or do not comply with our Collection Development Policy. Note: if materials are not found in and/or not considered for the collection, this does not constitute a ban. Find more information on our Collection Development Policy here: Collection Development Policy.
Our library adheres to the American Library Association (ALA) professional standards. ALA’s statement on book censorship states their commitment to “defending the constitutional rights of all individuals, of all ages, to use the resources and services of libraries. We champion and defend the freedom to speak, the freedom to publish, and the freedom to read, as promised by the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.” Members of the Wenworth community have the right to choose what they read, regardless of their personal viewpoint. This policy confirms our commitment to intellectual freedom.
