Transcript for graphic: Evaluating Sources. Is the source credible? Relevant? Reliable? Current? Reasonable? Accurate? Objective?

How to Evaluate a Source

When evaluating a source, ask questions to determine if a resource is suitable for  academic research and writing.

Things to consider:

1.  Author:  look at their qualifications, education, expertise in topic, bias

2.  Date: how current is the information-remember newest isn't always best, but be sure to check dates

3.  Relevancy: how important is this source to your research?

4.  Publication: is this a well regarded journal

5.  References: are there references included?  Are they reliable?

6.  Purpose: what is the purpose of this information?  Who is it written for? Is the author selling something?

7.  Bias: is the information factual?  Is it objective or opinion?
