Newspapers: Primary or Secondary Source?

Newspapers can be a primary or secondary source, depending on when they were published. When looking for newspaper articles that are primary sources, check the date. The date the article was published should be around the same time as the event you're researching!

Newspapers via the Boston Public Library

Step 1:
Obtain a BPL eCard (Boston Public Library electronic card). Then you can access several historical newspaper databases from anywhere with an internet connection.

  • America's Historical Newspapers

  • Boston Herald (2004-2011)

  • New York Times (1851-2007)

  • New York Times (1985-present)

Step 2:
Once you have the BPL eCard, head directly to the BPL Electronic Newspaper Collectons to begin searching.
