Library Student Assistant

Position Description

Work Schedule: 5-10 hours per week as required (may include opening, closing, and/or weekend hours)

Pay Rate: $12.75/hour

This position provides circulation services to members of the Wentworth community during Library hours.

During the Fall of 2020, the Library will be operating under new procedures based on the Massachusetts Workplace Safety Standards for Libraries and recommendations from the CDC, in an attempt to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection to our users and workers.  Accordingly, Library Student Assistants will be expected to perform new tasks and comply with safety protocols in addition to the typical job responsibilities as outlined in the section below.  For example, Library Student Assistants may be asked to enforce Library occupancy levels and to remind Library users to wear masks, wipe down study areas, and refrain from eating/drinking.  Library Student Assistants will be expected to wear a mask at all times during their shifts and maintain personal hygiene (e.g., hand washing) according to established protocols; they will also be furnished with additional PPE (e.g., gloves, face shields) appropriate to the task being performed.  

Responsibilities

  • Provides circulation services including: charging and discharging of Library items, retrieving and shelving Library items, and performing opening and/or closing duties under the supervision of a Library staff member
  • Answers basic questions about Library services, materials, and spaces
  • Performs stacks maintenance tasks including: shelving, shelf-reading, shifting, and other special projects as assigned
  • Assists patrons with equipment such as computers, printers, scanners, and other technology
  • Represents the Library to patrons in a friendly and professional manner
  • Performs other duties or projects as needed 

Expectations

  • Shifts are assigned on a semesterly basis; Library Student Assistants are required to attend all assigned shifts. 
  • Missed shifts are only acceptable for family & medical emergencies; other reasons should be communicated to and approved by a staff supervisor in advance. 
  • Some Student Assistants are assigned to work opening, closing, and weekend shifts; those who work these shifts will be given priority in scheduling.  

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current enrollment at WIT
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Ability and willingness to learn Library procedures and systems

Preferred:

  • Work study funding
  • Familiarity with and enthusiasm for working with technology
  • Some work may require the ability to work independently for stretches of time

Technology Sandbox Manager (WIT co-op)

Position Description

Work Schedule: 37.5 hours per week

Pay Rate: $16/hr

The Technology Sandbox Manager plays a key role in providing services and resources to users of the Technology Sandbox in the Schumann Library & Learning Commons at Wentworth Institute of Technology. This is a great opportunity to work in an innovative and student-­driven environment at Wentworth, while gaining practical business management, communications and technology skills. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Technology Sandbox space on a daily basis - Open and close the space, maintain and troubleshoot equipment, loan and schedule resources and equipment for visitors, other duties as assigned.
  • Provide instruction and troubleshooting help to ensure visitors’ success in using Technology Sandbox resources and equipment. 
  • Collaborate with Library Staff to oversee Technology Sandbox Student Assistants.
  • Collaborate with students, faculty and campus partners (Accelerate, EPIC programs, DTS, the Learning Center, and others) to promote Technology Sandbox services and resources throughout the WIT community.
  • Collaborate with Library Staff to develop, publicize and run programs and events in the Technology Sandbox.
  • Collaborate with Library Staff to develop and enforce policies related to the use and management of the Technology Sandbox.

About the Technology Sandbox 

The Lloyd Andres Carney Technology Sandbox is an informal, student-run, drop-in space housed within the Schumann Library & Learning Commons, providing the Wentworth community with opportunities to learn about technology through hands-on exploration and peer-learning.

The technologies and programs available in the Tech Sandbox will be chosen by students and inspired by their needs. Examples of the types of technology that will be available in the Sandbox include 3D design/scanning systems, 3D printers, gesture computing systems, digital cameras, VR/AR systems, Raspberry Pi and Arduino minicomputers.

Technology Sandbox Student Assistant

  • Ensures Technology Sandbox facilities and equipment are well maintained.
  • Provides Technology Sandbox users with instruction and technical assistance with services and related technologies including 3D printing and scanning.. 
  • Provides support for equipment borrowing service.
  • Represents the Library and Technology Sandbox to patrons in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Performs other duties or projects as needed.
