Library and Online Learning Resources During a University Contingency

How to be a Successful Online Learner

Guidelines for Participating in Online Classes

In an online course we are creating a community of learners who are collaborating to enhance their own learning and the learning of others.  Therefore, it is essential that all communications in discussion boards, IM chats, emails or group forums be polite, respectful and reasonable.  Creating respectful dialogue is an essential skill for every aspect of our lives.

For Live Class (Video) Sessions:
  • Connect and log into the live session 5-10 minutes before the start time.
  • Make sure that your Internet connection and account are working properly by testing the microphone and camera settings.
  • It is important to participate in these sessions from a quiet space.
  • Make sure to turn your phone on silent to participate in the course uninterrupted.
  • If you have a question during the live class, use the chat function to reach out to the instructor.
  • If you experience technical difficulties contact Tech Spot immediately at 617-989-4500, techspot@wit.edu.
For Discussion Boards Forums:
  • Participation is still expected for classes without live (video) sessions. This will include weekly discussion board prompts and any specific posting expectations.
  • Check discussion board threads early and frequently to stay engaged in the conversation with your peers.
